History

The University of North Carolina was founded and established in 1789. The

 

university is the oldest public university in the US. The president of the university

 

is Erskine Boyce Bowles. The location of the college is in North Carolina in the

 

US. During the depression the general of North Carolina searched for cost

 

savings. With the effort of this in 1931the general redefined the University of

 

North Carolina. In this time the university was known as University of North

 

Carolina at Chapel Hill. They used this name for the entire university of North

 

Carolina system. The new Consolidated University of North Carolina at Chapel

 

Hill, North Carolina State University, and the University of North Carolina at

 

Greensboro. The campuses came under leadership of one board and one

 

president. In 1969 the other university joined campuses joined Consolidated

 

University through legislative action.

 

In 1970, North Carolina passed legislation bringing into the University of

North Carolina system all 16 public institutions that

 

award bachelor degrees. This round of consolidation granted each constituent

 

institution a Chancellor and a Board of Trustees. In 1985 the North Carolina

 

School of Science and Mathematics, a residential high school for gifted students.

 

Those students who declared an affiliated school of the university. In 2007 the

 

high school became a full member of the system. The university has many

 

 

nicknames, they are: UNC, North Carolina, or just plain Carolina. The University

 

of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a public research university.

 

 

 

The Campus

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has a sprawling landscape with 729-

 

acres is made up of two central quads: Polk Place and McCorkle Place. Polk Place

 

is named after North Carolina native and university alumnus President James K.

 

Polk. McCorkle Place is named after Samuel Eusebius McCorkle who is the author

 

of the original bill requesting for the university. The Polk Place is a courtyard in

 

the campus where students gather to hang out. The campus is divided into 3

 

regions, North Campus, Middle Campus, and South Campus. The North campus

 

has 2 quads with have the Pit, Frank Porter Graham Student Union, the Davis

 

House, and the Wilson Libraries. Most of the classrooms in the University are

 

located in North Campus. Also in the North Campus some of the undergraduate

 

residence halls. 

 

The Middle Campus contains Fetzer Field, Woolen Gymnasium,

 

Students Recreation Center, Memorial Stadium, Irwin Belk outdoor track, Eddie

 

Smith Field House, Boshamer Stadium, Carmichael Auditorium, Sonja Haynes

 

Stone Center for Black Culture and History, School of Government, School of

 

Law, UNC Health Care, George Watts Hill Alumni Center, and the Rams Head

 

complex. The Middle Campus also includes many residences for college students

 

that attend the university. The South Campus includes the Dean Smith Center for

 

men’s basketball, Kenan-Flagler Buisness School and the newest student

 

residence halls. The student’s newspaper, The Daily Tar Heel has won many

 

awards for collegiate media and the student radio station, WXYC made the

 

world’s first internet radio broadcast.

 

Academics and Curriculum

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is known best for their excellent

 

Academic scores. The University of North Carolina offers 71 different bachelors

 

degree programs, 107 different masters’ degree programs and 74 different

 

doctoral degrees

 

programs. Usually the university usually enrolls 28,000 students from 100 different

 

Carolina counties, 49 different states, and 47 other countries. The state law in

 

North Carolina requires that each freshman class meets or exceeds 82% of which

 

students must be from North Carolina. At the undergraduates level students

 

spends their first 2 years working on the basic requirements in English, Social

 

Science, Foreign Languages, Mathematics, and Natural Science.

 

Libraries

The library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill comprises a number

 

of many other libraries throughout the whole campus. The libraries hold more

 

than 5.8 million volumes. The university has the largest collection of volumes in

 

any statewide. The library in the university has a production of southern and odd

 

books that other universities don’t have. The University of North Carolina at

 

Chapel Hill is known for the Ibibio, which is one of the world’s largest collections

 

of free information. The information that you can get software, music,

 

literature, art, history, science, politics, and other cultural studies.

 

 

 

Reputations and Honor Code

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was named public ivy by Richard

 

Moll in his 1985 book. Higher rankings have been awarded to many of UNC’s

 

professional schools. The schools business program ranked fifth “ Best Executive

 

MBA”. The undergraduate program was ranked in the top 30 in the United

 

States. It is also consistently among the top 5 public universities, it is behind UC

 

Berkley and the University of Virginia.

 

 

Scholarships

UNC offered many undergraduate scholarships, known as the Morehead Scholarship. The students who receive the scholarship receive tuition, room and board, books and funds for summer study. Twenty five alumni of the program have been named Rhodes Scholars, since the inception of the Morehead program. Another scholars program is the Robertson Scholars Program. The students who are receiving the scholarships have an opportunity to attend both UNC and neighborhood Duke University. Some of the scholarships being given offer full scholarships for out-of-state students.

Athletics

The universities sports teams participate in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl and the Atlantic Coast Conference.  In sports UNC is referred as “University of North Carolina”. Since the fall of 2008, the university had won 34 NCAA team championships, in 6 different sports, 8th all time. The 34 NCAA championships include, 19 championships in women’s soccer, 5 in women’s field hockey, 4 in men’s lacrosse, 4 in men’s basketball, one in women’s basketball and one in men’s soccer. The universities baseball team from 2006-2008 has won 3 consecutive College World Series. 

 

Mascot and Nickname

The universities nickname is the “Tar Heels”, this name comes from the eighteenth century importance as a tar and pitch producer. The nickname has many history tales from both the American Civil War and the American Revolution. The mascot is a live Dorset ram named Rameses, which dates back to 1924, when the team manager brought a ram to a football game against Virginia Military Institute. This was inspired by the play of a former football player, Jack “The Battering Ram” Merrit.

 

Rivalries

One of the South oldest rivalries are the University of Virginia; this was well-known much of the twentieth century. In September of 2008 people saw the 117th meeting in football between the two teams. Other rivalries of UNC compete with Duke University, North Carolina State University, and Wake Forest. The rivalry with Duke University is intense in basketball. Both teams in men’s basketball have been contenders for the National Championship for decades. The two schools are just 8 miles apart, the students and fans of both schools are focused in their shared disregard. The students sometimes exchange pranks on each other before major athletic competitions.
