Derrick Rose

By: Cole K

Derrick Martell Rose is an American professional basketball player who plays for the Chicago Bulls of the NBA.

Early Life Derrick Rose was born in Chicago, Illinois to Brenda Rose and was the youngest of four brothers.  He grew up a huge fan of basketball, rooting for  the Bulls lead by Michael Jordan.  In his early years you could catch him on nearby basketball courts with his brothers Dwayne, Reggie, and Allan. With their influence he dribbled at an early age and became ambidextrous.  As his talent for basketball grew and the number of city championships grew his brothers kept outside contact away from Derrick fearing that his way to the NBA would be ruined by outside influences.

High School In 2003, Derrick was accepted at the Simeon Career Academy and played Freshmen and JV basketball in his first year of high school. He wore number 25 in honor of Benji Wilson, a Wolverine player who was shot by a gang member.  Rose went on to score 18.5 points, grab 4.7 rebounds and snatch 2.7 steals per game.  In Roses’ varsity debut he scored 22 points, 7 seven rebounds and 5 steals.  He led the Wolverines to 30-5 for the season.

College Derrick accepted a basketball scholarship to the University of Memphis Tigers coached by John Calipari. Rose had to switch to number 23 not wearing 25 because the number was retired in honor of Penny Hardaway, who played for the Tigers. The Rose – lead Tigers started out the season ranked third in the nation. Memphis sprinted to a 26 -0 start and  took number 1 seed in the country.

NBA

Derrick is 20 years old when he is drafted into the NBA from the number one seed out of Memphis. “The only thing that was more important to him at that time was the election of Barrack Obama”, said Thomas Green a coach of Rose in eighth grade. He was the Bulls’ best player. He plays like Jordan solid and low key. He doesn’t pound his chest or fire up the crowd. Defenders never know what he what he will do until the last second the he goes from zero to sixty and takes it in. At the end of the first week of play rose was averaging 18.9 points, 5 rebounds, and 5.6 assists.
