Cell Phones                                           Jeremy B

English/5th

Originally called Mobile phones, cell phones are small portable phones that have taken the world by storm. There are an estimated 250-300 million cell phones in use in the U.S.

The concept of cell phones came to be in the 1940’s. But nobody could ever come up with that kind of technology. The idea began when scientists looked at car phones and decided to try mobile phones. The original idea was to create some sort of Walkie-Talkie on steroids. But that idea was soon crushed due to the fact that the signal wouldn’t be able to travel very far. Then AT&T thought about using radio waves. That is when cell phones started to become a part of reality.

The first cell phone was used on April 3, 1973 and will be remembered forever. The man that used the first cell phone was named Martin Cooper and is still living today. He was working at Motorola's Communications Systems Division. And my favorite part, he made the call to his rival, Joel Engel, working at AT&T J. They named the device the cellular phones because the system uses many base stations to divide a service area into multiple “cells”.

There are many services, or carriers, when it comes to cell phones. A few examples are Alltel, Verizon Wireless, T-mobile, Sprint and AT&T.  I will be comparing these companies through various traits like Best features, plans, reception, and overall. Just for the record, best means what is most popular and most used/bought.

Best Features: The winner of this is pretty obvious if you really think about it. It’s the iPhone by AT&T. With features like wi-fi, itunes connection, an application store, and much more, the iPhone is the phone with the most gadgets.

Best Plans: It’s a tie between two very known services. Alltel and Verizon. Verizon won because of the plan to call and text any other Verizon user for free. Alltel also won because of “My Circle” and the fact you can change it to your wanting just for you.

Best Receptions: AT&T has reception all over the U.S., but Verizon isn’t backing down. You might have heard Verizon’s phrase “Don’t Be Afraid Of Dead Zones.” That is why, once again, it’s a tie.

Best Overall: I did my research and found out what services are the most used by people and which is most popular. Here they are from 5 to 1.

5: Sprint is famous for it’s push-to-talk feature that acts as a walkie-talkie. It also has a lot of data space for people who want more software.

4: AT&T is the only services for iPhone fan. But AT&T has much more to offer that just the iPhone.

3: T-Mobile has rocketed to the top since it’s creation of the G-1, or Android. T-mobile is supposed to be very similar to Verizon Wireless. It plans are also really cheap.

2: Alltel is loved for its “My Circle.” People also love how you can make your plan exactly what you want it to be.

1: Verizon Wireless is known for many things; Service, features and all the different phones you can get. It is the most popular service around because most people have it.

Features in a cell phone have always been important to the buyer. With technology these days, a phone can do as much as a computer: features like GPS, Wi-Fi, Voice memos, cameras and even Bluetooth. But the most important is Text messaging. Every cell phone has the capability to send texts to other cell phones.

There are 3 main types of cell phones in this world. They are Slider, Flip, and Touch Screen. A slider is a phone that the front section of the phone slides up revealing a number pad. A flip phone is a phone that the front section flips up showing the real phone. A touch screen is a phone that only has a giant screen that is touch sensitive. But only one can be the best.

In 3rd place is the flip phone. Originally, all cell phones were flip phones. But over time more has come out and flip phones lost some popularity. There are still many people with them, but not as many as there was.

In 2nd place is the slider phone. These phones are liked for there uniqueness and they’re compact. They are also probably the most easy to use of the three types. These phones are doing well in the race of cell phones.

In 1st place is Touch Screen cell phones. They are really loved for what they can do. People like the fact that there are no buttons on the phone, but only a screen that you touch to use.

There are many phones in the U.S., but only five can be in the top five.

5: The Sony Ericsson. This slider phone has a great design and an even better built in MP3 player. The bad part is that the menu is confusing to use and the buttons are crowded.

4: The Blackberry Bold. This smart phone has so many features it’s not even funny. The bad part is that it is a bit bulky and inconvenient to use.

3: The LG Dare. It has a great camera, browser and an amazing touch screen! So pretty much, it’s features are what makes it great. The bad part is that it has some features that are extremely difficult to use.

2: The Diamond. A smart phone that can do anything! Fast computing, wifi, Bluetooth, and GPS. The bad part is that the virtual keyboard and menu are cramped

1: The iPhone. With so many features, it’s the best smart phone around.  The only bad thing is that it has a small battery life.

Cell phones have been brought a revolution to this world. They will continue to be embraced by technology. Cell phones will forever be a part of technology and a part of people.
